I didn’t realize I was pregnant and had my teeth whitened. Have I hurt my baby?
Jeannette G. – Brooklyn
Jeannette,
I know the recommendation is to not whiten your teeth during preganancy. It’s likely you’re panicking right now, but I want to reassure you. The reason for the recommendation is that they have not been proven safe in pregnancy.
The only way to prove it safe during pregnancy is to have a test group where women do teeth whitening while pregnant and then have safe deliveries with healthy children. It shouldn’t surprise you that women aren’t running to be included in such tests. No one, including you, wants to risk harming their child.
So, remember, just becuase something isn’t recommended or proven safe, doesn’t mean that you’ve done irreparable harm to your child. Relax….at least until you’ll have to run to the bathroom again.
